The Gorge of Lumbier
The Gorge of Lumbier es a natural enclave located 14 km from Sangüesa and 38 km from Pamplona, between the village of Lumbier and Liedena. It is a beautiful landscape and it was declarated Natural Reserve in 1987, is a gorge carved into the rock by the river Irati. This cannon has up to 120 m of height and a rich ecosystem for its fauna and flora.
Ornithological tourism. This enclave is one of the ideal places for the observation of birds in Navarre, collects a good number of interesting species and a few good conditions of observation. In its vertical walls, nest an important colony of tawny vulture and also they can be observed another species like alimoches, jackdaws, vencejos…
Irati, the first electric train on the penninsula, was crossing into its journey from Pamplona to Sanguesa the Gorge of Lumbier, saving with two tunnels excavated in the rock the difficulties of the terrain. At present the old route for the train is a green way that allows to see the throat from the inside, in a confortable and accessible walk to all the public ones.
In turn, the Gorge of Lumbier has another attraction added to its own values, which for it passes a "alternative" route of the Way of Santiago. Many pilgrims prefer to take this itinerary to the tradicional, though it suppose approximately 5 km more the beauty of the surroundings or walk through the tunnels is an added attraction.
Other information of interest
One is worth giving a walk along the village of Lumbier and visiting the Center of Interpretation of the Nature, which tries to foment the knowledge of the natural and cultural values of the zone, to interpret the existing ecosystems as well as to develop environmental sustainable practices.
You can also practicad flying and gliding to horseback riding through the area.
